Security surrounding Lecter is like that in a nuclear lab, which you will later know is not overly cautious. At the first appeance of Lecter, his posture alone is already somehow weird.
Starling, a diligent, stoic, grade-A FBI trainee, nervously, and trying to hide her nervousness, sits in front of Lecter. Instantly Lecter sees through her vulnerability, laying out his profiling on her "with your good bag and your cheap shoes... you look like a more than one generation from poor white trash. In her face twitch, we see her fear to get intruded into her past.
To get help from Lecter for the case of the serial killer Buffalo Bill, Starling keeps in touch with him. She comes to fully trust his ability to analyze. Lecter also seems to be amused by her visits. Lecter is not a villan at all. Generally speaking, at least in movies, we love psychopaths, especially when they help the protagonist. It is almost exhilarating to see how he outsmarts the guards and officers in the middle of the film.
No matter how iconic the psychopath Dr. Lecter is, my highest praise goes to Jodie Foster. Clarice Starling is the type of person whose intelligence directly reflects her sensitivity, and it is probably the nature that the actress herself has. Starling holds up on the verge of fear, and go through risky paths to reach the truth. Foster's delicate expressions show Starling's internal conflict, contemplation, and judgement.
Large part of the film consists of close-up shots, which means you spend much time to watch the characters' faces, closely enough to examine their pores. This may subliminally make remind you of the important object of the story: skin. Throughout the film, you keep feeling the softness of skin, whether the owner is alive or dead. I suspect this is one of the secrets that make this film so creepy.
Aside from the character close-up shots, the camera always wabbles anxiously. Most locations are set in gloomy local neighbourhood. I like a scene set in a victim's room, where Starling finds many private objects that maybe the owner would not want the others to see. Someone's private space is where you might find strangeness, physically or mentally. And the film digs into each character's deep private space.
